What is the Emergency Contraceptive Pill (Morning After Pill)?

The morning-after pill, also known as an emergency hormonal contraceptive pill, can be taken to follow unprotected sex to avoid pregnancy. It is recommended to take the pill as soon as possible after sexual intercourse. If you require the pill, one of our pharmacists will carry out a short assessment by asking you to fill in a short questionnaire to establish if the treatment is suitable for you. We offer a private morning after pill service.

Can I take the Emergency Contraceptive Pill?

Generally, most women can use the emergency contraceptive pill. This includes women who can’t use hormonal contraception, such as the combined pill and contraceptive patch. You’ll need to pause breastfeeding after taking the emergency contraceptive pill.

The morning after pill may not be suitable for you if you need to take steroid medicines for asthma or if you are overweight.

Common side effects of the Emergency Contraceptive Pill

It is very safe and serious side effects are rare. Common side effects include:

1. headache
2. feeling sick (nausea)
3. period like pain and cramping
